This episode of Living Myth begins with the sense that seeing opposing sides to every story has become a mental as well as an emotional habit in modern life. The bifurcated thinking that produces “good versus bad” and “us versus them” traps us in static polarizations; but also leaves us with a false sense of reality and a diminished worldview.
In mythic terms, the third thing is the charm that can break the numbing spell of binary choices. When it comes to the meaning and purpose of human life, the old dichotomy of “nature versus nurture” cannot tell the whole story. The third element, that can make all the difference, is the inborn presence of a genius self that is neither derived from genetics nor shaped by the conditions of the outside world.
Genius refers to the unique spirit in each person’s life and to an inner pattern that holds the keys to understanding the meaning and purpose hidden within each life. An old idea states that genius tends to be revealed in adverse circumstances. There may be no greater time for people to awaken to the inner spark of genius than this period of deep oppositions and worldwide crisis at so many levels of life.
